Description

First released in 1969, the groundbreaking Datsun 240Z offered customers a combination of speed and reliability, instantly redefining what an affordable sports car could be. Raising the bar for British and Italian competition for years to come, by 1975, Nissan had released the Datsun 280Z for the North American market, which would soon evolve into the completely redesigned 280ZX in 1978. Offered with more aerodynamic styling, a longer wheelbase to accommodate 2+2 seating, and a larger fuel tank, the 280ZX also featured a more luxurious interior and many power options.

The 280ZX Turbo was introduced in 1981, featuring a turbocharged version of the 2.8-liter L28E inline-six engine, designated as the L28ET. This engine produced 180 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque, a substantial increase over the 135 hp naturally aspirated version. The Turbo was equipped with a Garrett T3 turbocharger and a Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system, which helped improve both performance and fuel efficiency. The 1983 model year saw the 280ZX Turbo receive several updates, including a revised interior with more modern amenities and improved aerodynamics. As a measure of its performance, the 280ZX Turbo enjoyed success in motorsports, particularly in the IMSA GTU and GTO classes, where it was driven by notable racers like Paul Newman.
