1960 Studebaker Champ Pickup Start Up Video
Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
This very special collection is offered from Dr. Karl Peace, an esteemed collector dedicated to the Studebaker marque. Following his donation, in its entirety, of his car collection to the Georgia Southern University Foundation, the collection is offered, entirely without reserve, via Hagerty Marketplace.
“The newest American truck on the road today is also the lowest priced!” New in light duty trucks for 1960 was the Champ, and Studebaker was justifiably proud. Starting at $1,875 the Champ looked like their successful Lark compact car, and in many ways it was. With Studebaker on the financial brink since the mid-1950s, the design department had a paltry budget of $900,000 to deliver anything that looked newer for a pickup. The chassis was from the earlier 2R and 3E pickups, and the powertrains carried over from the previous year. You can see the Champ’s 2R5 heritage from the fender-side box dating to 1949. Yet, “Inside that smart new cab it’s as roomy and comfortable as a passenger car, with the same kind of visibility all around,” since the cab was derived from the four-door Lark. And the Lark’s front sheet metal gave the Champ a very contemporary look.
Powered by the rugged 170 cu-in 90 hp six-cylinder engine this truck tough, car comfortable 1960 Champ 1/2-ton pickup displays why Studebaker could boast, “You’ll be mighty proud to take the wheel of this husky, handsome Champ.”

Dr. Peace began a career in biostatistics in the pharmaceutical industry in 1978. His early career path saw him rise to vice president of worldwide technical operations at Parke-Davis / Warner Lambert, followed by his founding of Biopharmaceutical Research Consultants Inc. in 1989. Dozens of international biotech and pharmaceutical companies relied on his expertise for development and regulatory approval of dozens of medicines, including drugs used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, arthritis, anxiety, depression and panic attacks, and gastrointestinal ulcers. In 1998 Dr. Peace approached Georgia Southern University with a plan to establish a biostatistics center, a corresponding program of study in biostatistics at the graduate level, and a school of public health. He returned to the Statesboro, Georgia, campus in the fall of 2000, when Georgia Southern began to offer the Master of Public Health degree in biostatistics. In 2004, his endowment to honor his late wife led to the creation of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. He is author, co-author or editor of 15 books, 22 book chapters, and over 100 articles in the scientific, medical or biostatistical literature; and is the recipient of over 50 prestigious awards.
