1957 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Cold Start & Driving
Description
At the dawn of the 1950s, Alfa Romeo underwent a significant transformation, departing from its prewar legacy of ferocious engines and body-on-frame designs. Instead, the brand embraced a more sophisticated approach with the introduction of a twin-cam four-cylinder engine and its first forays into monocoque construction. Despite these changes driven by economic shifts in Europe, Alfa Romeo retained the spirit that had propelled it to numerous grand prix victories before World War II. In 1954, Alfa Romeo unveiled its new small-car lineup, highlighted by the elegant Giulietta Sprint coupe, followed by a sedan version the next year. However, it was the mid-1955 debut of the Pinin Farina-designed Giulietta spider that truly captured the automotive world's attention. Built on a slightly shorter wheelbase and featuring the Twin Cam inline four-cylinder engine in 1.3-liter form, the Giulietta Spider epitomized style and performance. Although later replaced by the Giulia Spider, the basic design of the spider remained largely unchanged for almost a decade, a testament to Pinin Farina's enduring work.
