Description

The GMC S-15 Jimmy is a compact SUV, based on the Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck platform, introduced by General Motors in 1982. Designed for both off-road and urban driving, it offered two- and four-wheel-drive options. The 4x4 version is equipped with a torsion bar independent front suspension, 32-mm stabilizer bar, and high ground clearance, allowing it to handle rugged terrain with aplomb. While smaller than the K5 Blazer, the S-15 Jimmy had ample interior space, including a luggage area of 21 cubic feet, slightly larger than its bigger sibling.

Powered by a standard four-speed manual transmission, the S-15 Jimmy could also be upgraded to a four-speed automatic. The 4WD version could tow up to 4,000 pounds with the trailering package. It featured a smartly designed rear seat that folded flat for additional cargo space, making it practical for both off-roading and family use. With trims including the Sierra Classic the S-15 Jimmy combined ruggedness with interior comfort, making it a versatile choice for a range of driving needs.

Of course, there are those for whom the options spelled out in the brochure are just not enough. One such GMC customer was Ted Mottaz who chanced upon a similarly equipped Jimmy Woody while leaving a screening of Return of the Jedi in 1983 in Bloomfield Hills, Illinois. Once home Mottaz hounded his local dealer for more information, eventually ordering the car later that year. After many months of waiting and many excuses later, the Woody – fitted with genuine English Ash trim – arrived at Lindsay’s Auto Centre in Galesburg, Illinois. Since taking delivery, this exceptionally rare vehicle has covered just 45,350 miles over the past 40 years and is offered from its original owner.
