Model overview
Model description
VW went from strength to strength, building 739,443 cars and sending 159,995 to the U.S., which was 32.1 percent of all imports, according to Ward’s Automotive. Despite domestic automakers fighting back with the Chevrolet Corvair, Ford Falcon and Chrysler Valiant, American buyers purchased 117,868 VW Beetle Sedans and 5841 Cabriolets in 1960.
Prices rose slightly with the 1960 Deluxe Sedan now costing $1565, the Sunroof Sedan $1665, and the Cabriolet $2055. The 1192 cc engine was uprated to 36 bhp with the compression ratio raised from 6.6:1 to 7:1.
New push-button door handles replaced the pull type, seat backs were now curved, the headliner was now plastic instead of mouse fur, the right hand armrest had an open grip and the passenger had a footrest. Mechanically, the dipstick was made easier to read, the oil drain plug was moved to the sump and an improved carburetor was fitted. Electrically, the turn signals were moved to the top of the front fenders and integrated into the rear taillights. A steering damper and front sway bar were fitted. The windshield wiper/washer switch was combined.
Eight exterior colors were offered for the Sedans. They were Black (L41); Jupiter Gray (L225 Standard only); Mango Green (L346); Jade Green (L349); Arctic Blue (L363); Ceramic Green (L419); Indigo Blue (L436); Flint Gray (L440); Indian Red (L451).
Ten Cabriolet colors were available. They were Black (L41); Rock Gray (L264); Jade Green (L349); Slate Blue (L361); Sargasso Green (L445); Paprika Red (L452); Alabaster Off-White (L473); Yukon Yellow (L10009); Alaska White (L100015); Brunswick Blue (L100018).
Interiors could be cloth, leatherette, or combined. Cloth colors were Silver Beige, Olive or Turquoise. Leatherette options were Silver Beige, True Red, Soft Beige, Turquoise, and Ice Blue. Interior colors were coordinated with exterior paint. Sunroofs were Black, Jupiter Grey and Jade green. Convertible tops were Light Gray, Black, Beige, Green and Brown. Headliners could be Light Gray or Beige, carpets were Gray or Honey Brown and rubber mats were Gray.
