It’s not the fastest car in the world, nor is it the most luxurious … but it might be the most quirkily charming car of all time, though. Originally engineered by Ferdinand Porsche (yes, that Porsche) in the 1930s, the “People’s Car” is both the longest-running and most popular car ever produced on a single platform, with over 21 million sold through 2003. In spite of its Teutonic origins, the Beetle became hugely popular in post-war America, thanks to its unique styling and friendly price point. By the late ’60s the Beetle was the best-selling car in the world, eventually surpassing the production numbers of the Model T. As the Volkswagen Beetle’s American popularity ebbed throughout the 1970s, it took on new life in Mexico, becoming extremely popular south of the border throughout the ’80s and ’90s as the car (aka el vochito) was produced in Puebla and exported by the thousands throughout Europe. Even as the original Beetle went out of production in 2003, VW’s New Beetle (essentially a Golf with retro Beetle styling) was ramping up for a two-decade run, with the final version of that model rolling off the line in 2019 for the last time.
