Model overview
Model description
For the 1990 Pontiac Firebird, there were only minor changes and updates. The interior panel options were simplified, and the locations of some buttons changed. A driver’s side airbag was also included as standard equipment in ’90. Because of the airbag, steering wheel-mounted audio controls were not available for this year. Otherwise, things mostly continued as they had in 1989.
Trims for the ’89 Firebird were base, Formula, Trans Am, and Trans Am GTA. The base featured a new 3.1-liter V-6 engine, while the rest were available with either the tuned port injected 305 cid V-8, throttle body injected 305 cid V-8, or the 350 cid V-8. The 350 cid V-8 now came standard with the dual catalytic converter setup, which had previously been an option. It brought output up to 235hp.
Because of stricter fuel economy regulations, the 350 cid V-8 was no longer offered with the T-Tops, and no Pontiac Firebird convertibles of any trim were built by ASC for the 1990 model year. ASC had been the only Pontiac-sanctioned third party convertible maker. There were multiple other coachbuilders that had been making convertible Firebirds, and some may exist on this vintage. If they exist, they would be extremely rare.
The Firebird GTA (Grand Turismo Americano) continued to be offered. It featured unique gold wheels, unique styling, and seats with inflatable side bolsters. The GTA also came standard with the WS6 performance package, which included a tighter steering ratio, beefier front and rear sway bars, upgraded struts, and ZR-rated performance tires.
