Model overview

Model description

Oldsmobile sales jumped almost 100,000 units in 1969, and the division passed Plymouth for fifth place in the U.S. market. The bigger cars grew 4 inches in length, but the entry-level F-85 (now just one model), the Cutlass, the Cutlass S and the 4-4-2 received a minor facelift, with headlights moved closer together and vertical taillights.

The 1969 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 was its own separate series for the second year with Sports Coupe (2,475 sold) two-door Hollywood Hardtop (19,587), Convertible (4,295) and Hurst/Olds Hardtop (906). These included W-30 models with a 360 bhp 400 cid V8, and W-31 models with a 325 bhp 350 cid V-8. Both engines were significantly hotter than the stock units with big valves, high-lift cams and either Hurst 4-speeds or Turbo-Hydramatic dual-gate auto shifters. The 1969 big-block W-30 package was actually cheaper than the W-31, which cost $310. Less well-known was the W-32 option, which offered the same cold-air intake package but a mildly tuned 400 cid engine. In all, about 300 W-32s were built.

The Hurst/Olds cars were only slightly altered for the 1969 4-4-2 and more were built. All were finished in Cameo White and Fire Frost Gold. The 455 cid Rocket V-8 cranked out 380 bhp but was slightly slower than the year before, with 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds and a quarter mile in 14.3 seconds at 101 mph.

Options for the 1969 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 included power brakes, power steering, air conditioning, power seats, super stock wheels, power door locks, AM/FM stereo, cruise control, tilt steering, tinted glass, wire wheel covers, Sports console, Turbo-Hydramatic automatic transmission, 3-speed floor shift manual, and 4-speed manual (close-ratio optional).
