Model overview

Model description

In 1984 Ford’s Special Vehicle Operations, only a few years old, created the Mustang SVO. It featured a unique front fascia with a revised headlight layout, a dual-wing rear spoiler and a functional, off-center hood scoop. That scoop fed a turbocharged 2.3-liter four with an output of 175 horsepower—the same as the high-output version of that year’s venerable 5.0 V-8.

More than just a new engine and new look, the Mustang SVO also received some chassis upgrades, including larger sway bars, Koni gas shocks, four-wheel disc brakes, and 16-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Gatorback radial tires. The cabin of the Mustang SVO featured Recaro bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Hurst shifter and additional gauges for water temp, oil pressure, and turbo boost.

The base engine in the Fox body Ford Mustang continued to be the 2.3-liter inline-4, making 88hp. A mid-range 3.8-liter V-6 made 120hp. A Turbo GT featured the forced-induction 2.3-liter, making 145hp. Two 5.0 V-8 engines were offered. The standard output was 160hp, while the high-output version made 175hp.

To commemorate 20 years of the Ford Mustang, a 20th Anniversary Edition was created. Offered with either the 5.0 or Turbo, it was painted Oxford White with a Canyon Red interior. Along the side ran a “GT350” decal, and was available in fastback or convertible variants.

1984 also marked the first year of the Saleen Mustang. It featured aggressive aerodynamic ground effects and heavily revised suspension, but would not see any serious engine modifications. If you’re looking for a Saleen Mustang, later models had more seriously tweaked performance.

Many factors can increase a car's value including excellent condition, exceptional originality, a recent restoration, low mileage, unique provenance, desirable options, popular or unique color choices, and excellent maintenance records. Upgrades and modifications that enhance performance or aesthetics can also add value.

Factors that can decrease a car's value include unusually high mileage, poor maintenance history, visible wear and tear, accidents or damage, title issues, and gaps in ownership history. Additionally, less popular color choices and extensive modifications that don't appeal to a broad audience can reduce value.

Mileage plays a significant role in a classic car’s value. Lower mileage usually increases value because it indicates a higher degree of originality, is rarer, and suggests less wear and tear. However, cars with exceptionally low mileage may also have maintenance needs due to lack of use. Whether someone should pay more for a vehicle with lower miles will depend on how they plan on using it, and the vehicle's specific condition.

The value of modified cars differs widely based on the type and quality of modifications. While some modifications can significantly increase value, especially performance enhancements and high-quality custom work, others may not add much or could even detract from the car’s value if they appeal to only a limited audience.
