Model overview
Model description
Many Chevy performance machines have worn the “SS” Super Sport badging, but only one has ever worn it as its model designation. The 2015 Chevrolet SS, largely based on an Australian-market Holden Commodore, entered its sophomore year with a few key updates for performance fans, including an available manual transmission, and the Magnetic Ride Control suspension borrowed from the Corvette. Chevrolet offered more paint colors for 2015 as well, including a head-turning neon green. The 2015 Chevrolet SS carried a base price of just under $47,000.
The 6.2-liter LS3 engine continued to be the only powerplant—also from the Corvette. In the SS, it was rated at 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through either a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters or the available 6-speed manual transmission.
For 2015, GM added the Magnetic Ride Control to the mix. This advanced suspension system uses shocks filled with fluid that change their viscosity when an electric current is applied. Not only can this system respond to road conditions instantaneously, but it also allows for adjustability. The SS has a drive mode button with Tour, Sport, and Performance drive modes, adjusting the suspension, throttle response, and shift mapping (for the automatic). There is also a little-known secret mode. By pushing the traction control deactivation button twice, it engages Competition, which turns off traction and stability control.
The 2015 Chevy SS came extremely well equipped. Leather upholstery, sport bucket seats, an 8-inch infotainment system, all came standard. It also came with tech features such as forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. For 2015, Chevy also added Wi-Fi hot spot capability. The only option was an available sunroof.
