Model overview

Model description

For the 1968 Chevrolet Impala, the Super Sport was relegated to a Z03 option package that included the same extras available in 1967 like vinyl interior, bucket seats, console shift and 4-speed manual gearbox or 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmission. Since the SS was now just an option, the Z024 SS 427 was an option-of-an-option. Buyers got a special power bulge hood, 15-inch wheels and the L36, 385 bhp 427 cid V-8 with 10.25:1 compression for $385.10. If they wanted the monster 425 bhp L72 with 11:1 compression, they paid an extra $542.45. Full-size muscle cars were losing ground to mid-size models since they just weren’t as quick, and Super Sport Impala sales dropped sharply to 38,210 units. Only 1,788 were SS 427 models, but since these were just an option package, they are easier to fake. The rest of the Chevrolet Impala line was still the big seller 1968, though.

Base engine for the full-size cars was now the 155 bhp six accompanied by the de-stroked 200 bhp, 307 cid V-8. Optional motors included the 250 bhp 327, ($63.20), 275 bhp 327 ($93.70), 325 bhp 396 ($158), 385 bhp 427 ($263.30 – included with SS 427 option) and 425 bhp 427 ($447 with SS 427 option).

Base transmission was a 3-speed manual gearbox, and overdrive cost $115.60. Powerglide 2-speed automatic was $184.35 with a 6-cylinder and $194.84 with a V-8 except the 427. A 3-speed Turbo-Hydramatic was $226-$237, a wide-range 4-speed with all V-8s was $184.35, a close-ratio 4-speed with 427 V-8 was $184.35, and a heavy-duty close ratio 4-speed with 427 only was $310, 70.

Options multiplied this year for GM products and on the Impala included air-conditioning ($447.65), Positraction rear axle ($42.15), dual exhaust ($27.400), special instrumentation ($79-$94), power brakes ($42.15), power disc brakes with 15-inch wheels ($121.15), power door locks ($44.80-$66.50 4-door), six-way power seat ($94.60), AM/FM stereo ($239.15), four speakers ($133.80), cruise control ($92.70) and tilt steering column ($42.15). There were also black or white vinyl roof ($79) and wire wheel or mag-style hubcaps ($52.70-$73.75).

Chevrolet offered 15 exterior colors for the 1968 Impala and six two-tones. They were Tuxedo Black (AA), Ermine White (CC), Grotto Blue (DD), Fathom Blue (EE), Island Teal (FF), Ash Gold (GG), Grecian Green (HH), Tripoli Turquoise (KK), Teal Blue (LL), Cordovan Maroon (NN), Seafrost Green (PP), Matador Red (RR), Palomino Ivory (TT), Sequiua Green (VV) and Butternut Yellow, (YY).

Two-tone color combinations included (top color first) Ermine White/Grotto Blue, Ermine White/Tripoli Turquoise, Grotto Blue/Fathom Blue, Fathom Blue/Grotto Blue, Palomino Ivory/Ash Gold and Island Teal/Teal Blue.

Interior colors were Black, White, Blue, Green, Red, Fawn, Aqua and Gold. Impala and Super Sport convertible tops could be black, white or medium blue, and color keyed interiors were a mix of cloth and vinyl, or vinyl in the case of Super Sports and Impala hardtops. Convertible tops were typically Black, White or Blue and vinyl tops were White or Black.
