Model overview

Model description

The 2001 production year was the shortest of any Chevy Camaro to date, as the factory geared up for the final 35th Anniversary Camaro model in 2002. Changing tastes in the wider market had led to the rise of boxy SUVs and the resulting fall in sales of just about everything else. Camaro production totaled 29,002, with 16,357 Base models and 12,652 Camaro Z28s. They divided into 12,481 Base Coupes, starting at $17,650, 3,876 Convertibles at $24,945 and 11,200 Z28 Coupes, from $22,200 and 1,452 Z28 Convertibles from $29,325. Air conditioning was standard on all models.

The base powerplant for the 2001 Camaro remained the 200hp V-6, with a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. Z28 power was boosted to 310hp from the 346 cid V-8. Output for the 2001 Camaro SS increased to 325hp. Automatic transmissions were a no-charge option on the Z28, but Base Camaro buyers spent $815, and 20,558 cars were so equipped.

A total of 6,332 buyers paid $3,950 for the WU8 Camaro SS package, which included the cold-air induction hood, special suspension, power steering cooler, different rear spoiler and 17-inch wheels. Sales divided into 3,512 6-speed coupes and 411 6-speed convertibles, and 1,956 automatic coupes and 453 automatic convertibles. A total of 4,662 Z28 buyers who ordered the 6-speed gearbox spent an extra $325 for a Hurst shifter.

The B4C Special Service Package attracted 288 buyers and was a modified Z28 minus the badges and with a body colored roof, 1LE rear traction arms, power steering cooler and P245 16-inch tires. Of the 288 cars, 279 were automatics and nine were 6-speed.

Once more the Y3B Rally Sport Package was available for the V-6 Coupe and Convertible, directly from SLP. The cars had dual silver or black stripes, custom grille, RS emblems and Z28 exhaust. V6 power was increased to 205hp and 398 buyers spent $849 each. The V-6 Performance Handling Package Y87 cost $275 and 1,697 buyers opted for that.

Retail option groups AU0/AU3 involved power accessories, like keyless entry, power door locks, windows, hatch release, mirrors, cruise control and fog lamps. The Sport Appearance Package Y3F added different front and rear fascia and rocker panels, and a rear spoiler extension. A total of 2,249 buyers ordered it and it cost Z28 customers $1,348 and Base customers $1,755.

Eight colors were available for the 2001 Chevrolet Camaro, and Sunset Orange was new, though 13 cars were painted that shade in 2000. Hugger Orange was discontinued. The favorite color was Light Pewter Metallic (6,421), followed by Black (6,033), Bright Red (5,662), Arctic White (3,579), Navy Blue (3,519), Monterey Maroon Metallic (1,485), Sunset Orange (1,380) and Mystic Teal Metallic (930). Convertible tops were predominantly Black (4,431), Neutral (824) and White (73). Leather seating cost an extra $500, but 11,716 buyers thought it was worth it.
