Would You Pay Six Figures for this Six-Wheeled Porsche?
A 1987 Porsche 944 that’s not only been converted into a pickup but also packs six wheels is for sale in Germany.
Although priced at a lofty $110,000 at today’s exchange rate, that’s still a hefty discount compared to the $190,000 that the seller was trying to achieve in 2023. If you look at the shear amount of graft that has gone into the car then it could even be considered good value.
The Porsche pickup was built by 914-Boxergarage in Karlsbad over a period of 26 years, with a claimed 2500 man-hours going into its construction.
Under a 944 S2 hood is a reconditioned three-liter engine from a 968, the headlamps come from a 924 Carrera GT, and the 17-inch BBS alloys would once have been worn by a 993 Turbo (actually one and a half Turbos). The three axles, however are sourced from a couple of Audi 200 Turbos. If all that didn’t grab your attention then the bright orange paintwork, Porsche decals and number 69 on the doors surely will.
The cabin is trimmed in black leather, accessorized with orange to match the exterior. There are heated seats, power steering, electric windows and a stereo. Extra fresh-air is available by removing the custom Targa roof panel. The pickup bed is decked in oak and has a removable tailgate, plus there’s a trailer hitch so you could even tow another Porsche if you fancied it.
The build process began in 1995 and was completed in 2021. It’s passed Germany’s strict TÜV testing and is said to be “ready to drive immediately.”
Head over to Kickdown Auctions if you fancy what might just be the most unique Porsche on the planet.
Cool car but not six figures cool.
Exactly; my unfulfilled fantasy of a discretionary 6-figure+ expenditure on a 944/968 Porsche, would tend to be a well-preserved (or meticulously, rotisserie-restored) original.
It be interested to know just how severe the poor thing understeers, with the overwhelming tire grip of the dual rear axles dominating. No doubt, a well-executed mutation, but, a good example of ‘just because you can, doesn’t always mean you should’.
Initial reaction, though: Unique? Eccentric? Nailed it; in much the same way the savagely-incredible vehicles of the Mad Max franchise are amazingly cool and extremely creative.
It isn’t unusual to see any kind of custom anything, offered at a high reserve, in a commendable, but typically futile, attempt to re-coup investment of material, if not labor.
I wonder what the turning radius is.
Misguided passion.
Actually, you’d have to pay me six figures to even be caught dead in this monstrosity.
Me too!!!!
It needs 6 wheel steering.
Looks like it’ll fit a 4×8 sheet.
Ugly
no
Whenever I see any vehicle converted to tandem axles, I wonder if both axles are driven, and if so, how.
Sadly, the advert states a “transaxle engine” so one must assume only the front two wheels are driven.
The good news is: That leaves the door wide open for the next owner to to spend the next 26 years and 2500 man hours adding a second engine and drivetrain to power the 4 rear wheels!
I’d pay four figures for a four-wheel porsche
Would I pay six figures? No.
Will someone? I suppose it’s possible.
I’d rather have an unmolested 944 myself.
For $110k you could get both a decent 944 and nice used F150. The 944 would be a better car and the F150 a better truck.
I’d pay six figures: $1+$1+$1+$1+$1+$1. That’s six, right?
