VW’s ID. Buzz to Start at $59,995

VW/James Lipman

It’s been a long while coming, but the VW ID. Buzz is finally set to reach U.S. dealerships soon.

The EV-age successor to the Vanagon and Microbus has been on sale in Europe since 2022, but the American edition is, unsurprisingly, bigger, and from the looks of the latest interior images, rather more luxurious.

The ID. Buzz seats seven thanks to a nine-inch longer wheelbase than the Euro van which also makes room for a bigger 86 kWh battery pack in the skateboard chassis. More batteries mean more power and range for America, as well as the option of all-wheel drive.

In standard 282-hp rear-drive guise the ID. Buzz offers an estimated EPA range of 234 miles, reduced to 231 miles in the 335 horsepower AWD version. Plug in to an ultra-rapid charger and it should add enough electrons to go from 10 to 80 percent charge in 30 minutes.

By now you’re probably familiar with the van’s styling, which somehow manages to meld just enough nostalgia with a throughly modern look, but only now has VW revealed the final interior specifications. Exclusively available to U.S. buyers are three color “worlds”. Copper takes inspiration from mid-century modern design and features brown leatherette seats with yellow piping, brown door inserts, and a washed wood-look dash. Dune is a bright and airy coastal theme, with grey seating and clay piping and inserts along with a light wood-u-like dash. Moonlight is more moody and dark, with brown seating, white piping and a dark wood-look dash and black headliner.

Three models will be available from launch with business-like names that rather undermine the fun factor. The entry-level Pro S is rear-drive and is offered in Candy White, Deep Black Pearl and Metro Silver with a choice of Copper or Moonlight interiors. The standard kit list is too long to list in full here, but includes 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LED headlights, a 12.9-inch infotainment screen and nine-speaker audio system.

Upgrade to Pro S Plus and the color options widen to include eight two-tone schemes featuring Candy White top with Cabana Blue, Blue Charcoal, Energetic Orange, Indium Grey, Mahi Green, Metro Silver, or Pomelo Yellow below; or a Metro Silver top with Cherry Red below. You also get a 14-speaker harmon/kardon audio system, and power sliding doors, and can specify AWD and an electrochromatic panoramic smart glass roof if you fancy it.

At the top of the heap is the 1st Edition with a Dune interior and your pick of five two-tone paint jobs in Candy White top with Cabana Blue, Energetic Orange, Mahi Green, Metro Silver, or Pomelo Yellow. Bonus goodies include special alloy wheels, roof rail cross bars and captains’ chairs.

Prices start at $59,995 for the Pro S, rising to $69,995 for the 1st Edition 4Motion with AWD.

If made as an ICE hybrid < $50k, this would sell well. Lighter is better. No range anxiety. Unfortunately this is a second car, not viable for primary vehicle or weekend trips.

Hybrid is the way to go….this will not sell in large numbers….too bad, I would be a buyer. VW missed the mark here.
