Sshhh! Jaguar Land Rover debuts anti-noise system
Jaguar Land Rover is fitting the same tech employed in your noise-canceling headphones to the Jaguar F-Pace, XF, and Range Rover Velar.
The technology uses microphones mounted on each wheel to pick up wind and road noise. Software analyzes the sound in realtime and then plays opposite sound waves through the car’s stereo to cancel it out.
JLR says that it can reduce the amount of cabin noise by 10 decibels and is especially effective at cutting out low-frequency sounds, like tire roar, which can cause driver fatigue.
The system is said to be even more beneficial in electric or hybrid cars where these sounds can’t be masked by a nice throaty induction roar from the engine or a sonorous exhaust. It’s a stark contrast to rival Audi, which is actively adding sound to enhance the driving enjoyment of its new e-tron GT. Who do you think has got it right?
