Reservations for new GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 filled in 10 minutes
Eager to get behind the wheel of a GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1? If you haven’t already claimed your place in line, it may be too late. According to Fox Business, reservations for the upcoming six-figure electric SUV sold out within 10 minutes of its introduction on national TV over the weekend.
How many that is, we don’t know. GMC has not announced how many EV SUV Edition 1 models that it plans to produce.
NBA star LeBron James narrated a minute-and-a-half intro commercial for the SUV that was shown during the NCAA Final Four basketball semifinals on Saturday night. It obviously got the job done.
Last October, reservations for GMC’s Hummer EV pickup truck were gobbled up just as quickly.
GMC’s introductory ad for the Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 focuses on the vehicle’s revolutionary capability. Driven by General Motors’ Ultium Platform, it includes a CrabWalk feature, which allows the vehicle to move diagonally on loose surfaces like dirt, sand, or snow. When activated, the Hummer’s four-wheel-steering system will point all four wheels in the same diagonal direction. The SUV also comes with Extract Mode, which can literally raise the vehicle off its 126.7-inch wheelbase by about six inches (using air suspension), allowing it to clear large obstacles. It has a turning circle of only 35.4 feet (10.8 meters).
The EV’s 20-module Ultium battery system offers up to 830 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque (estimated), and it can accelerate from 0–60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The vehicle has an estimated 300-plus miles of range (with standard equipment).
The SUV Edition 1 comes standard with 22-inch premium wheels, assist steps, and floor liners. An optional Extreme Off-Road package adds 18-inch wheels and 35-inch-OD MT tires, underbody armor, rock sliders, front eLocker and virtual rear lockers, heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts, and UltraVision2 with an underbody camera. Its standard Infinity Roof offers removable Sky Panels, I-Bar, and rear drop glass.
The SUV offers Super Cruise hands-free driving technology on more than 200,000 miles of enabled highway, as well as an automatic lane changing feature in which the system can determine when a lane change is optimal and initiate the maneuver.
Hummer’s return to GM’s portfolio has been met with a lot of anticipation. All of that excitement is even more amazing when you consider that the limited-edition $105,595 Edition 1 won’t arrive for another two years—in early 2023 as a 2024 model.
