McLaren GT reveal coming on May 15

McLaren teased its new “rule breaking” Grand Tourer at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and then last month gave us clues about its appearance. Today, the supercar maker announced that the McLaren GT will be officially unveiled next week, at 8:00am EDT on May 15th, in an online event at https://cars.mclaren.com/new-mclaren-gt.

The “superlight” GT is part of McLaren Automotive’s $1.57 billion “Track25” business plan that will introduce 18 all-new models and variants by 2025. The McLaren GT is the fourth of the new crop, joining the McLaren Speedtail, the 720S Spider, and the 600LT Spider.

As part of that plan, McLaren has increased the capacity of its Woking assembly facility by 50 percent, to 6000 units annually. It also started in-house fabrication of the carbon-fiber composite tub that is is the foundation of all McLaren automobiles, at the $65.3 million McLaren Composites Technology Centre in Sheffield.

At the Geneva show, McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt said the McLaren GT will be the lightest and best-handling grand tourer on the market, resulting in the most “usable” mid-engine car ever made by anyone. It will also likely be the quickest, with a class-leading power-to-weight ratio.

“It will be a car that combines competition levels of performance with continent-crossing capability, wrapped in a beautiful lightweight body,” Flewett said.
