Maserati Shamal Restomod Gets the Guts from a Ghibli

Modena Automobili

Marcello Gandini’s Maserati Shamal sees its original V-8 swapped out for a 500-hp V-6 from the last Ghibli S in a restomod from Modena Automobili.

The Italian startup explored the idea of bringing a Lancia Fulvia Monte Carlo up to date, but decided on the ultimate iteration of the Maserati Biturbo for its first restomod instead. The company claims to have spent 1000 hours brainstorming and 300 hours on styling.

The wide-body design is by Paolo Ferrari, who previously worked for ARES on its Pantera reboot and S1 supercar, to give the Shamal an even more aggressive look. There are new LED lights, major aero additions from the front splitter to side skirts, rear diffuser and roof and trunk spoilers, but retained features include the grille and door handles. Sadly Gandini’s unusually-shaped rear wheel arches have gone to accommodate new fender flares.

Under the vented hood is a three-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine and ZF eight-speed transmission from the Maserati Ghibli S. It might lose two cylinders compared to the original, but delivers 180 more horses. That auto ‘box should also be easier to manage than the Getrag six-speed manual which was fitted to the Shamal. A top speed clear of 180 mph and the ability to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in five seconds is on the cards

Modena Automobili starts with a Biturbo then strips, coats and strengthens the chassis to take the extra power. Although not currently detailed we’re expecting that the brakes and suspension will be suitably upgraded as well.

Inside there will be seats by Recaro and and updated infotainment system, together with a luxurious retrim. No images have been shown yet, but we hope the marvelous Maserati clock remains in place.

The company’s plan is to build 33 example at its Modena base which is within walking distance of the Maserati factory where the original 369 Shamals were made. The price is around $650,000.

    1) Yeah I agree. The original looks better this is a bit more blocky and modernish in spots.
    2) A fool an his money? Crack is a hell of a drug.

Interesting ideas done to the restomod, but you lost me at $650K. One could have an MC20, and MC20 Cielo and a third Maserati of choice with the same money.

I think some work on the Shamal to address the well known issues, with some paint and trim options would be a way more sustainable product to sell to at a worldly price many more people seeking an something interesting, stylish, and analog.

    Price will kill it.
