Maserati has a terrible “leak” problem

It’s not what you think, but what we do know is that the Maserati company decided that the best way to build excitement for its new SUV would be to get factory workers to shoot the car and “leak” the images on social media. The resulting blurry pictures are truly awful and reveal next-to-nothing about the new crossover. Arguably that’s the point.

The Grecale, which will be launched later this year, is designed to be a Porsche Macan fighter and has a lot in common with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. It will use Maserati’s new Nettuno V-6 engine, though, and will be offered in hybrid and pure-electric forms as well. The turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 features innovative pre-ignition technology and, in the MC20 supercar, produces 630 hp. We don’t expect quite such a high output in the new SUV, but Maserati says the Grecale will be the fastest in its class, with a top speed higher than the Macan Turbo, and more rapid acceleration. The electric version is expected to use 800-volt battery technology like Porsche’s Taycan, and to rapid charg at up to 300 kW.

Like its illustrious forebears such as the Mistral, Ghibli, Bora, Merak and Khamsin, the Grecale is named after a powerful wind and the company has a lot riding on the new model. Let’s hope Maserati’s workers build cars better than they take photographs and don’t blow it.
