Lynk & Co Cyan Concept cracks two unofficial Nürburgring records
Cyan Racing, formerly Polestar Racing, brought the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept to the Nürburgring and proceeded to create two new unofficial records on the Nordschleife course.
The 528-horsepower road car variant of the race car that Cyan campaigns in the World Touring Car Cup championship lapped the ‘Ring’s northern circuit in 7 minutes and 20.143 seconds. Thed Björk, the 2017 WTCR champion, completed the course at an average speed of 105.9 mph, making it both the fastest four-door car and the fastest front-wheel-drive vehicle to so far lap the ‘Ring. That time is for the full 12.93-mile Nürburgring circuit, not the slightly shorter version many manufacturers use in their ‘Ring record attempts.
That’s three seconds faster than the Jaguar XE Project 8 sedan that held the previous four-door record and a whopping 25 seconds quicker than the Renault Megane RS Trophy R that had been the fastest FWD car around the Nordschleife.
Christian Dahl used to run the factory racing team for Volvo under the Polestar Racing banner. Dahl sold the performance car division of Polestar to the Swedish automaker, which is positioning the brand as the maker of high performance electric vehicles, Dahl retained ownership of Polestar Racing, renaming it last year to Cyan Racing, now the official motorsport partner of the Geely Group, Volvo’s Chinese owner.
Lynk & Co is the Chinese-Swedish spinoff that Geely is positioning between Volvo and its domestic Chinese brands, hoping to target young professionals. The 03 Cyan Concept is being considered for production as a Lynk model.
When the 03 Cyan Concept was first introduced, Christian Dahl described the motivation behind it, saying that it could be the basis of a production performance car from Lynk.
“This is a natural step for us together with Lynk & Co,” Dahl said. “To build a road version of a race car is a great way to learn more about a car and its characteristics. This is a performance concept but it might also be a first step towards a performance offer for Lynk & Co customers were we bring what we learn on the track to the road.”
Let’s hope even an ounce of this record-setting performance’s capability makes its way into final Lynk & Co production cars.
