Two legends reunited: Walter Röhl behind the wheel of the Lancia 037

The Lancia 037 chassis was the last rear-wheel-drive entry to win the World Rally Championship. The legendary Walter Röhrl was behind the wheel. Now, 36 years later, the winning Lancia 037 chassis #305 and Röhl meet again for a documentary celebrating the WRC history the combination wrote. We just got eyes on a small clip of the pair driving through the Italian hill country. Needless to say, it’s worth a watch.

The Lancia 037 packs a small-ish 2.0-liter four-cylinder mounted amidships and driving only the rear wheels, like a smaller version of its predecessor, the Stratos. The tail-happy antics of these short and wide 037 chassis make it seem as though the little supercharged engines pack more punch than the 205 horsepower at which they were rated. Resplendent in Martini livery and wearing the full front light kit for a night stage, the only thing better than looking at the 037 is hearing it rip down the road.

The trailer might only be 1:44 long, but consider us hooked and eagerly awaiting the full release of the documentary. We will keep our ears tuned for the sound of screaming exhaust and squealing tires, as the trailer doesn’t give a timeline for when the full documentary can should expected.
