Great Scott! DeLorean heads back to the future with 2024 Alpha5 EV

DeLorean is gunning for Porsche and Mercedes with an all-new high-performance luxury EV called the Alpha5.

It’s no surprise then that, at first glance, the four-seater coupe isn’t far removed from the likes of the Porsche Taycan and the Mercedes Vision AMG concept, presenting a sleek and sporty profile. Rest assured there are true DeLorean styling cues as well, though. For starters the Alpha5 has the brand’s trademark gullwing doors, which in this iteration are simply massive to grant easy access to all four seats. At the rear you’ll find louvres over the rear window, while the car also wears turbine style alloy wheels, just like the DMC-12. Both cars were penned by Giorgietto Giugiaro‘s Italdesign. “In Italy, they never really stopped designing DeLoreans, which was awesome,” DeLorean boss Joost de Vries told Autocar.

The Alpha5 is claimed to accelerate to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 150 mph, and when driven more sedately it should achieve a range of more than 300 miles on the U.S. EPA cycle, said de Vries. While we were hoping to hear it would be powered by 1.21 Gigawatts of electricity, the reality is that a 90 kWh battery pack is probably sufficient.

A first run of a Back to the Future-referencing 88 cars will target collectors, with the vehicle serving as an avatar for an NFT artwork. These initial Alpha5s won’t be road legal, but low volume production will follow soon after. The Alpha5 is set to be revealed to the public at Pebble Beach in August, and is just the beginning for the reborn DeLorean brand. The company is planning a V-8 sports coupe, a battery-electric sedan, and a hydrogen-powered SUV. Without access to a time machine we can only wait and see if it’s a success.
