“F9” trailer welds star power and engine power

The trailer for the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise has landed and it has precisely the excessive amount of explosions, punches, and burnouts you’ve come to expect

The film brings back many of our Fast and Furious favorites. Of course, Vin Diesel is a must, along with Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Ludacris. Big star power came when Charlize Theron was added to the previous installment, 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, and she’ll reprise her role. Bolstering Theron in the cast are the talented Helen Mirren and the incredibly versatile Michael Rooker. Also Cardi B.

After Fast and Furious regulars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham got their own spin-off movie Hobbs and Shaw, we were braced for a decided lack of pro-wrestler-turned-actor, so we were pleasantly surprised to see John Cena added to the cast as Diesel’s estranged brother. Cue the rivalry.

Like the past few movies in the series, we expected F9 to be more concerned with an exotic heist than with car racing, but there are no doubt plenty of chases interspersed with high-tech heist gadgets and fantastically choreographed fights. Most importantly, as revealed in the trailer, we’ll get to see a rocket-powered Fiero. As long as the movie didn’t destroy too many of them in the making, we’ll let Ludacris’ derisive tone toward the mid-engine Pontiac slide.

In our first watch, we spotted Dom’s Charger, a GR Supra, a Nova, a Jeep Gladiator, and, at the very end of the trailer, a late-model Mustang, plus a Hellcat Charger in what appears to be the franchise’s most bizarre stunt yet. Rather than figure out the impossible physics, we’ll keep looking for cool cars. Which ones did you spot?
