Caterham’s electric future arrives in July

Lightweight British sports car maker Caterham is to reveal a new electric supercar that’s a far cry from its Lotus Seven-inspired heritage.

Codenamed Project V the concept coupe will be revealed on July 12 as part of Caterham’s 50th anniversary celebrations. It will then go on show at the Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 13-16.

From the teaser image and video below you can see that the Project V is nothing like the tiny two-seaters the company is known for. Penned by new design boss Anthony Jannarelly, who previously designed the W Motors Lykan Hypersport, in conjunction with Italdesign in Turin the new concept appears much bigger and more muscular than the Seven.

There are no powertrain details yet, but it is unlikely to use the same Swindon Powertrain electric setup as the Seven EV prototype the company recently displayed as the larger platform will definitely need more oomph.

Project V will be the first time since the ill-fated Caterham 21 of 1994 that the company has departed from its ultra-light roadster principles, but fans needn’t fret, however, with the company saying, “While this new concept may be a visual departure from the existing Seven range, Caterham remains committed to its core values of lightness, simplicity and a driver focused experience.”
