Camaro and Cadillac Affected by GM 10-Speed Auto Recall

Walker/Chevrolet

GM has issued a recall on 90,000 Cadillac CT4, CT5, and CT6 models equipped with GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission. The recall also applies to sixth-gen Camaros equipped with the same transmission.

The problem stems from a valve in the automatic’s valve body that may leak pressure and lead to rough shifting. One Cadillac equipped with an all-wheel drive version of the transmission suffered engine damage when the front driveshafts locked up. GM looked into the problem in late 2024 and discovered 115 field reports that may be related to this issue, including one accident that may have resulted. GM’s Safety Field Action Decision Authority (SFADA) initiated the recall.

Included in the recall are:

•2019-2020 Cadillac CT6 models built between June 26, 2018 – January 24, 2020

•2020-2021 Cadillac CT4 models built from September 11, 2019 – December 22, 2021

•2020-2021 Cadillac CT5 models built from May 29, 2019 – December 22, 2021

•2020-2022 Chevrolet Camaro models built between April 15, 2019 – June 28, 2022

Just 1% of the affected models are expected to have the problem. According to the NHTSA, “the recall will install new transmission control module software that will monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a wheel lock-up condition could occur.” If the vehicle is one of the expected 1% that have the faulty valve, excess wear will be noted and the vehicle will be prevented from shifting beyond Fifth gear, as the lockup occurs on the downshift from Eighth. GM will reimburse owners for repairs required to remedy the problem. Owners of affected vehicles should begin receiving notices starting April 21.

The 10-speed transmission was jointly developed with Ford, although each company builds them independently and with unique parts. Ford issued a series of Technical Service Bulletins for its version of the 10-speed automatic transmission that was fitted to Ford Broncos, Rangers, Mustangs, F-150s, Transits, and Expeditions, as well as Lincoln Navigators and Aviators. Those bulletins include updates for software and repairs for sticking valves and excess CDF clutch cylinder sleeve movement, so the two don’t seem to be related.

The idea of the wheels locking up because of the transmission is a scary thought. Hopefully it is a quick fix for the majority of affected owners.

Ya, Have had 2 vehicles with bad eight speeds. Dealers say that’s just the way they are. No more GM at my house.

These problems are in the Fords also. Hard to get them to admit to it. My 2020 F 150 has had some issues since I purchased it. Dealer always says can not duplicate. Which means They hook it to a code reader and it shows nothing.

I hopefully NHTSA is looking into more models because I’ve had some hard shifts in my ‘22 Sierra my wife said she doesn’t like driving the truck because it happened to her.

I have a 2020 Silverado with the 3.0 inline six diesel. Love the truck. I rec’d a notice regarding an upcoming safety recall and the dealership performed the recall while I had the truck in for other service. The recall number is N242454440 and the notice that was mailed ot me describes a potential situation of control valve wear and wheel lock up … just like what was described in the second paragraph of this article. I never encountered any transmission issues and have noticed nothing different since the recall.

Let’s get even more primitive: Torque-Drive. Rode in a Nova with 230 and Torque-Drive many, many times. Talk about sluggish…even the driver would get so frustrated, she would yank the shifter down into low, and away we would go – at least sorta.
