Gooding Consigns a Significant Collection of Porsche Race Cars

Gooding and Company just announced the consignment of a significant collection of Porsche competition cars from the 1970s-80s. The cars will be sold at its Amelia Island auction on Friday, March 9. For those who grew up following motorsports in those days, there are some instantly recognizable race cars in the collection.

The crown jewel is a 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder with a 1,000 hp turbo flat twelve. Although not ever campaigned in the blue, red and yellow of the Penske Sunoco team made famous by Mark Donohue, it is presented in those colors today. Similar 917s at auction of late have been golden. Around $4 million seems right on this.

The rest of the lots are less valuable but no less iconic, consisting of various 911 competition derivatives like the 911 RSR and 935, as well as two very successful 962s and the stillborn Porsche Indy racer. All things Porsche have been on a tear lately and this seems like a savvy time to consign a collection like this. Hagerty will be at Amelia Island to report the results.
