Auction Recap: Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2016
Barrett-Jackson closed out their year on a high note in Las Vegas, selling over 750 vehicles for $32.98 million in total sales and an average price of $43,562. We’ve been getting used to seeing year-over-year decreases at collector auctions so far in 2016, but Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas beat 2015’s total by over $3.7 million. Sell-through rate was, as is often the case, essentially 100 percent.
The weekend’s top sale was a 21,400-mile unrestored Boss 429 Mustang at $357,500, a strong but not excessive price for the model. The first two Pontiac Firebirds ever, cars #001 and #002, were sold as a package deal and brought $330,000. Other top prices included a Mosler twin-turbo prototype, which is supposedly capable of making 3,000 hp, selling for $220,000, as well as a 1970 Plymouth Superbird with a 440 Six Pack for a roughly appropriate $170,000. Barrett-Jackson also raised $850,000 for charity in Las Vegas with several big lots, including a custom 1962 Corvette at $200,000 and a special Jack Daniel’s Edition 2016 Indian Chief motorcycle at $150,000.
In addition to all the American muscle and hot rods, there were some downright interesting and even famous cars on offer as well. An unrestored 1968 BMW 2000 CS sold for $23,100, a 1967 Autobianchi Panoramica wagon sold for $19,800, a 1956 Messerschmitt kR-175 sold for $28,600 and a 1958 Edsel Pacer Convertible sold for $55,000. A 1952 Nash-Healey also sold for $69,300, and a ‘97 Mazda Miata M Edition sold for $25,300. That certainly seems like a fortune for an NA Miata, but this example had been stored from new, had less than 150 miles on the odometer, and was essentially a new car.
Sonny and Cher’s matching George Barris-modified 1966 Mustang Convertibles sold for $71,500 and $55,000, respectively, but as far as celebrity cars go, the crowd favorite in Vegas this year had to be Garth’s 1976 AMC Pacer from the movie Wayne’s World. The car was still in great shape and still featured the licorice dispenser and a trunk full of speakers. The car sold for $37,400, which may just be the most anyone will ever pay for a Pacer.

The Las Vegas sale ended Barrett-Jackson’s 2016 schedule. Their next collector car auction will be their flagship Scottsdale sale, scheduled for Jan. 14-22, 2017.
