Auction Results: Mecum Chicago 2014

Mecum Auctions’ recent Windy City event turned out to be a little chillier than expected, as total sales fell to $13.8 million, down 35 percent from last’s Chicago total. Much of that can be attributed to a 13-percent drop in sell-thru rate – and what seemed to be a sleepy crowd in the stands. Top sales went to a trio of Ford GTs, topped off by a 182-mile 2006 Ford GT Heritage Edition Coupe sporting the legendary Gulf Racing livery, which brought an impressive $513,000. Ford GT prices have been on everyone’s radar for their quick appreciation, and it looks like the momentum will carry on for a while.

There were plenty of attractive cars offered in Chicago, and one of the more popular attractions was an attractive 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS Hardtop Coupe 427/425 which sold for $64,800. Advertised as having mostly original paint, this example drew quite a bit of attention from spectators. Two other star attractions were a pair of 1987 Buick GNX Coupes. Both were essentially brand new cars, one with 157 original miles that sold for $89,460 and the other with 47 original miles that went for $105,300. With only 547 of these cars produced and with such an enthusiastic following, it is unlikely that they will be selling for a discount any time soon.
