Shelby American will sell you a brand-new 1967 GT500 Super Snake
The ability to own top tier performance from 1967 is easier than ever, with Shelby American announcing that 10 continuation Mustang GT500 Super Snakes will be built.
These special fastback models are a nod to the one-off Super Snake that was created by chief engineer Fred Goodell in 1967. A randomly-selected white GT500 received a transplant in the form of a 427-cubic-inch V-8. Also added were heavy duty front disk brakes, rear traction bars, Detroit locker rear end, and special Goodyear Thunderbolt tires. At the Super Snake’s media debut, Shelby piloted the car to a top speed of 170 mph.
Although the Snake proved to be a more-than-competent car, the project was shut down due to its projected sales price. That left only one example of a 1967 Mustang GT500 Super Snake—until now.
The new production continuation cars will be built using original 1967 Mustang fastbacks as the starting point and carry Ford VINs, along with a Shelby serial number for the Shelby registry. Few options are available, but the buyer will get to select either a cast-iron or aluminum block for the 427-cu-in V-8, which will provide 550 horsepower. The powerful engine will be mated to a four-speed manual transmission. Completing the package will be disc brakes and the signature triple stripes.
The cars will be built to order and command a starting price of $249,995. Compared to the value of a #1 condition 1967 Mustang GT500 ($252,000 in the Hagerty Price Guide and Hagerty Valuation Tools), the more powerful continuation might not be such a bad deal.
