Jeep Wrangler gets new diesel V-6 and two special editions

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler will get Chrysler’s new 3.0 V-6 diesel engine, which produces 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque—FCA’s eTorque mild-hybrid technology for Pentastar-powered automatic Saharas, beefy Willys, and luxurious Black & Tan editions.

Less than two years ago, the Jeep Wrangler debuted with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and a 2.0 turbo-four, and a third engine joins the lineup: the 3.0 EcoDiesel V-6. For 2020, this new engine will only be available in four-door Wrangler Unlimited models, coupled with the eight-speed automatic as standard. Those who want a manual shifter with a V-6 will have to settle for the Pentastar engine. However, automatic Sahara buyers will get the option of FCA’s eTorque mild-hybrid technology with both the V-6 and the turbo-four, which uses a 48-volt electric motor to boost torque and save gasoline.

Jeep also threw in two special editions for 2020. Available in 10 colors, the Jeep Wrangler Willys features a limited-slip rear differential, Rubicon rock rails and shocks, bigger brakes, and 32-inch Firestone mud terrain tires, on top of the Wrangler’s two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio. With standard slush mats and LED fog lights, the Willys sounds like the ticket for some off-road fun. Jeep will ask for $33,740 for the two-door model and $37,240 for the four-door version.

The Wrangler Black & Tan, at $32,940 for two doors and $36,440 for four, is more about the looks. Available in all exterior colors, it comes with 17-inch Machine Granite wheels and all-terrain tires, side steps, Low Gloss badging, and a tan soft top. Inside, Jeep added a ‘Wizard Black’ instrument panel mid bolster and Heritage Ta’ cloth seats. Uconnect’s seven-inch radio, a seven-inch driver’s display screen, and dual-zone climate control come as standard.

You can also get the 442 lb-ft diesel in the Ram 1500, but pricing isn’t expected until later this year after Jeep is finished with the V-6’s EPA certification.
