Tom Cruise’s 1986 Porsche 911 could be yours—if you’re the Top Gun

Bring a Trailer/Werkstatt

This 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa was owned by Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise, but he didn’t, uh, Cruise in it for long. Purchased new in April 1986—less than a month before Top Gun was released—the Porsche apparently didn’t hold the actor’s attention. He sold it only 10 months later, in February 1987.

Now it’s your turn to own this gorgeous black-over-black 911. Mission: Impossible, you say? Sure, buying an expensive German sports car may seem like Risky Business, but not if you know The Color of Money and make All the Right Moves. Sorry about that, it’s just that news of Cruise’s 911 being offered on Bring a Trailer brought a barrage of puns from A Few Good Men (and women) on our team, and we just didn’t want to waste any of the good stuff. Some were Far and Away better than others … much like this Porsche.

The spectacular 911 is powered by an air-cooled 3.2-liter flat-six engine, paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. Exterior styling includes European-spec H4 headlights, integrated front fog lights, 16-inch Fuchs wheels and a removable black Targa roof panel. The car received a bare metal repaint in 2020, as well as a replacement front windshield, rear window gasket, and Targa bar seal. The factory sugar-scoop light bezels were also refinished, and they accompany the car. The Targa panel was refurbished in 2010.

The interior of Tom’s former ride features black leather seats with a matching dashboard, carpets, and door panels. Amenities include leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable front sport seats, cruise control, power windows, and a Bluetooth-capable Blaupunkt Monterey cassette stereo.

The gauge cluster includes a central 7K-rpm tachometer, a 170-mph speedometer, auxiliary gauges, and an analog clock. Total mileage is unknown—a replacement six-digit mechanical odometer was installed under previous ownership and shows approximately 8800 miles.

The car, which spent time in New Jersey and Georgia before being purchased by its current Illinois owner in 2012, comes with service records, historical ownership documents, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Illinois title in the seller’s name.

With six days to go, bidding has reached $37,000 and will go much higher. A 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa in #2 (Excellent) condition has an average value of $62,000. That’s, of course, without the movie-star provenance, but we doubt Cruise’s 10-month dalliance is going to hold too much sway here.

If interested, get your finances in order and don’t risk Losin’ It. And should you become the lucky new owner, may we suggest that if Days of Thunder are in the weather forecast, just keep it out of the Rain, Man.
