Arizona Emissions Exemption: Victory

In 2005 the Arizona State Legislature approved a bill, HB 2357 recommending the repeal of Arizona’s emissions testing requirement for collector vehicles registered in Maricopa and Pima counties. After a long and careful deliberation, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved this recommendation. Additionally, all motorcycles currently registered in Pima County will now be exempt from testing.

The success of this effort is a great victory for hobbyists nationwide. The new regulation reflects the minimal impact that the collector vehicle fleet has on total vehicle emissions and allows hobbyists to use their vehicles without excessive government interference. Hobbyists in Arizona worked hard to see HB 2357 pass in the state legislature and gained near unanimous support among legislators and state regulators.

Implementation of the new regulation will likely take place before May 1st, 2007.
