You can own Baby Driver’s red Subaru WRX getaway car
The popularity of Subaru WRXs in the tuning community means that it’s difficult to find a used example that hasn’t been driven hard and modified extensively. This bright red 2006 version is a testament to that, and in fact, the punishment it endured was on display in a major Hollywood movie. It’s the star of the opening chase scene in director Edgar Wright’s action movie Baby Driver.
However, unlike your local Craiglister who insists “I know what I have,” this tastefully modified WRX is pretty appealing. And it will be auctioned with no reserve at Mecum’s Houston event in April.
The WRX features an STI drivetrain swap by Allpro Subaru in Alpharetta, Georgia, and its 2.5-liter, 300-horsepower turbocharged boxer engine sports forged CP pistons. The drivetrain was also beefed up for its generous screen time, putting its upgraded front and rear differentials and handbrake to use while drifting around metro Atlanta. We’re not sure how many takes stunt driver Jeremy Fry needed to get all the chase scene action in the can, but it the car doesn’t look any worse for wear.
This is one of multiple stunt vehicles used in the movie, although it’s not the rear-wheel-drive-converted one responsible for all Baby’s sweet drifts during his escape. That stunt car previously sold on eBay for an impressive $69,100.
If you’re the lucky bidder that takes the all-wheel-drive WRX home, you’ll also get copies of a build sheet, receipts, and interviews with stunt driver Jeremy Fry to go along with screen captures of the car in action.
You may be wondering if we at Hagerty noticed that Edgar Wright also chose a stunt-driving Subaru WRX in the final shot of Hot Fuzz. Yarp.
