Description
The C5 Corvette, unveiled for the 1997 model year, represented a significant leap forward for America’s sports car. Following the 15-year production run of its predecessor, the C5 arrived as a thoroughly modern interpretation of the classic Corvette. Chevrolet engineers employed hydroformed frame rails and a rear-mounted transaxle, resulting in a chassis both lighter and more rigid than the outgoing C4. Other new features included a drive-by-wire throttle and a variable effort power steering system, but most notably, the C5 introduced the world to the LS engine—an all-aluminum V8 that offered increased power and reduced weight compared to the previous LT1 unit. In 2004, Chevrolet produced a limited run of 2,025 24 Hours of Le Mans Commemorative Edition models. These special variants featured Le Mans Blue Metallic paintwork, bespoke badging, unique wheels, and, on Z06 models, a carbon fiber hood. The C5 Corvette continues to represent excellent value in the performance car market, with low-mileage, limited-production examples like the car on offer being particularly sought after.
