Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The quintessentially Jet-Age nameplate “Starfire” first appeared on Oldsmobile’s flashy four-seater fiberglass concept car at the 1953 GM Motorama exhibition, later designating top-of-the-line versions of its full-size Ninety-Eight convertible. However, it underwent a temporary hiatus before reemerging as an independent model series in 1961, based on the Super 88's 123 inch wheelbase and incorporating design elements from its larger counterpart, the Ninety-Eight. Initially only available as a two-door convertible, the Starfire positioned itself as a contender against the sporting Ford Thunderbird, boasting an “Ultra High Compression” version of the 394 cu-in Olds Rocket V8 – a period ad claiming it “breathes pure fire!” A Starfire Coupe joined the lineup for 1962, also bringing with it a compression bump to 10.5:1 (up from 10.25:1) and an extra 15 horses for 345 total horsepower. Today, Starfires are somewhat uncommon alternatives to the Thunderbird – collectible in their own right for their muscular V8s and attractive styling.
