Description
The Chevrolet Camaro was devised as a counterpunch to the famous Ford Mustang and in the process became a performance icon itself. GM had been forced to watch the massive success of the Mustang and immediately deemed it necessary to respond in kind, so a pony car was approved in 1964 and ready for the ’67 model year. The base Camaro featured a standard 230 cubic-inch inline-six engine, but seven additional options were available throughout the model line. The car could be had with the Rally Sport (RS) appearance package, which included a blacked-out grille, hidden headlights, interior upgrades, revised taillights and parking lights, and RS badging. Moving up the ladder, the Super Sport (SS) featured a standard 350 cu-in V8 and an optional 396 V8. Finally, there was the top-of-the-line Z/28 with its unique 302 cubic inch (4.9 L) V8 specifically designed to comply with the SCCA Trans-Am Racing Series' displacement limit. Chevrolet built nearly 100,000 Camaros for '67, and about one-third of them were SS versions. Sometimes Camaro enthusiasts longed for one in SS form and later created tribute versions from standard models — like the owner of this one did. This detailed build also included additional upgrades well beyond the initial SS offerings.
