6 sweet rides from the Porsche Werks Reunion at Amelia Island 2020

The Porsche Werks Reunion is one of the first events during Amelia Island Concours weekend, and even with only one brand represented there’s plenty of variety to keep showgoers’ eyes occupied. From air-cooled 356s to 911s with water coursing through the heads, the show field is filled with a wide variety of cars hailing from Stuttgart.

We walked through the rows and picked out six cars to share from the fairway, each with its own reason to warrant celebrity status.

2016 911 PCA Club Coupe

A collaboration between the Porsche Club of America and Porsche, the PCA Club Coupe was announced in 2015 for the 2016 model year to celebrate 60 years of the PCA. The Club Blau paint combined with the unique 20-inch wheels made us stop and take a second look. Just 60 Club Coupes were produced, and this example is one of only seven with the seven-speed manual transmission.

1962 356 S90 SR coupe

Custom colors are reasonably popular on Porsches, but this 356 is covered in a hue that just pops. The inspiration? A lagoon behind the original owners’ home. The technical term might be “paint to sample,” but this was even one step further. The couple had the paint mixed in their home state of Hawaii and then shipped to the factory to be sprayed; thus, the car does not have a factory paint code.

2018 911 GT2 RS

In a crowded field of aggressive and fast cars, the GT2 RS stands tall. Porsche’s fastest and most uncompromising version of the 911, the GT2 RS is a slightly civilized version of a race car. That might be why this one stood out, since it is a product of the Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur Division and is fitted with wild Chromaflair paint in a color called Urban Bamboo. The interior is matched Pepita. The absurdity of spending 18 months customizing what Porsche designed to be the most performance-focused model is not lost on us, but this car is just plain cool.

1968 912 rally car

The safari 911 market has risen to popularity over the last few years, but across from the bespoke leather-wrapped gas tanks of high-dollar safari builds sat this humble-looking 912. It  may not have the ground clearance and 31-inch BFG tires of the all-hat-no-cattle builds, but it does have legit off-road history. A racer from day one, this 912 competed in events around Sweden before being imported to the U.S. With all the right details in place, this car made us stop, look around, and then daydream about driving a rally stage flat out on a set of studded tires.

1976 911 Carrera (930 Turbo)

It isn’t often a Guards Red 911 would catch our eye, since it is—by far—the most popular color in Porsche lineup. However, the fender flares and subtle turbo graphics told us this common color was on a special car. Nicknamed “widowmaker” for its propensity to enter hedges backwards, the 930 Turbo is best known for light switch-like power delivery that will take an inexperienced or cocky driver for an … educational ride. This example features every available factory option and is in “as delivered” condition. Flawless to the naked eye, it is hard to believe it gets driven at all, but it’s surely a blast when it does.

1970 914-6 GT pickup

Of all the things we expected to see at Werks Reunion, a pickup was certainly not on the list. This was not a factory job, and in fact it comes from an owner with a sense of humor and knack for fake history. Rebuilt by California coachbuilder Dick Troutman after being damaged in an accident, the mid-engine sports car lost its rear trunk lid and gained some sheet metal, which created a mid-engine pickup. However, the owner wanted to lean into the story so he wove a tale of how this was created as a support vehicle for the Porsche effort during the 1970 Marathon de la Route on the famed Nürburgring circuit which had its podium swept by Porsche 914s. Cool trucklet, and it is nice to see folks having fun like this.
