Report: Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder are getting PDK automatics

In addition to spreading the naturally-aspirated flat-six love around its mid-engine models, Porsche will, by the end of 2020, reportedly offer its renowned PDK dual-clutch transmission in the top-of-their-lines 718 Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder.

The UK’s Evo recently reported that Porsche confirmed the GT4 and Spyder will get a PDK automatic transmission by the end of 2020. We’ve reached out to Porsche for independent confirmation but as of this writing have not received a response.

To be clear, there is no indication that the PDK, a dual-cutch unit, will replace the manual gearbox in the driver-focused 718 GT4 and Spyder; the PDK, should Porsche go through with the change, will be merely an add-on option. Our best guess is that Porsche hopes to boost sales numbers on these top-tier 718 models by widening the market to include two-pedal customers.

Would a PDK option on your 718 GT4 hardtop or open-air Spyder change your perception of Porsche’s hottest mid-engine twins? Let us know below.
