2020 Golf GTI to have 241 horsepower, Golf R to follow with 329 hp

We already took a peek at the 2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI getting busy up north, but now, the latest leak shared by Carscoops gives us a fairly good idea of what may be under the hoods of all upcoming peppy-engined Golfs. If this data turns out to be authentic as we approach the car’s Geneva debut, the 2020 Golf GTI will give us 241 horsepower, followed by the limited edition GTI TRC’s 296-hp turbo-four. The GTI Clubsport should be a 287-hp affair, where available. It seems that the so far Europe-only diesel GTD pairs 197 horsepower with plenty of torque, while the hybrid GTE will have a combined output of 241 hp, the same as a regular GTI.

This leaves us with the Golf R. Compared to the GTI, the R will have a frontal area even more open than that of a GTI TRC, plus dual exhausts with twin-pipes at the rear, as traditional. Oh, and 329 horsepower. If true, this is a significant upgrade on the previous R, which produces 288 hp in North America from its 2.0-liter TSI engine.

The 2021 Golf R will debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
