Hurl the Red Pig around Spa in Gran Turismo’s new update

Sim-racers around the world, rejoice. With its latest update, Gran Turismo has finally acquiesced to nearly two years of badgering from fans—Spa is here. Along with the renowned Belgian circuit, an interesting smattering of cars, race-bred and otherwise, are finally getting their time in the light.

The Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is a legendary racetrack draped through the forests north of Stavelot, Belgium. It’s the long-standing home of the Belgian Grand Prix and home to one of the most fabled turn complexes anywhere in the world, Eau Rouge. Spa is a benchmark for serious racing sims, and, with this latest “Sport” version, Gran Turismo finally cements its status in that exclusive group.

The most significant new vehicle introduced into the game is die Röte Sau, known more commonly as the Red Pig. Broadly speaking, the car is a Mercedes 300SEL turned into a skunkworks race car by the AMG tuning house. It’s the car that put the now in-house tuning group on the map—an impossibly red, ludicrously heavy brick of a car with a bellowing 6.8-liter V-8. The proliferation of round headlights gives it a distinctly pig-like appearance, hence the name. The car blitzed the 24 Hours of Spa in 1971, winning its class and earning second place overall.

The other rides included in Gran Turismo’s free October update include Porsche’s new all-electric 2019 Taycan Turbo S, the 2015 Mazda Demio XD Touring (known in the U.S. as the Mazda2 and a common car for B-spec racing), and the 2015 Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce (a slightly less-common car for B-spec racing).
