Kevin Hart seriously injured in crash of his 1970 Plymouth ’Cuda

Less than two months after Kevin Hart purchased the SpeedKore 1970 Plymouth Barracuda that appeared in 2018’s The Fate of the Furious, the actor-comedian was injured when a friend lost control of the car and crashed on California’s famous Mulholland Highway over Labor Day weekend.

Multiple news outlets reported that Hart suffered “major back injuries” when the car, driven by Jared Black, left the roadway and tumbled down an embankment near Malibu, California. Black’s fiancée, fitness trainer Rebecca Broxterman, was also in the car. Black also suffered back injuries; Broxterman was not seriously hurt.

According to CBS, Black and Broxterman were trapped inside the ’Cuda, but Hart was able to leave the scene of the crash and get medical attention at his home before he and Black were later transported to nearby hospitals.

Police say alcohol was not a factor.

NBC reported that Hart has already undergone back surgery. Hart’s wife, Eniko, told a TMZ reporter, “He’s great. He’s going to be just fine. He’s good. Everybody’s good.”

Good wishes have been pouring in from fellow actors and comedians, including Hart’s Jumanji and Central Intelligence co-star Dwayne Johnson, who tweeted: “Stop messing with my emotions brother @kevinhart4real. We have a lot more laughing to do together. Love you man. Stay strong. [Praying].”

Hart purchased the Barracuda to celebrate his 40th birthday on July 6. The muscle car is powered by a supercharged 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 that is tuned to produce 720 hp at 5800 rpm.

The ’Cuda debuted at the 2016 SEMA show. According to Hagerty senior editor Brandan Gillogly, then at Hot Rod magazine, “all of the bodywork ahead of the A-pillar is carbon fiber: hood, fenders, valence, header panel, and bumpers. It saved weight off the front tires so that even with a reinforced subframe, Dynamat soundproofing, and a supercharged iron-block Hemi, curb weight is a respectable 3400 pounds.”

Sean Smith, SpeedKore’s design director, told Gillogly he wanted to “preserve the styling of the vehicle that the fan base loves,” which meant keeping it clean and simple with a mean presence. The two-door ’Cuda features a lowered suspension, high performance wheels with foot-wide rear tires, and an updated interior.
