Dodge reveals one-off, Redeye-powered “Speed Trap” SRT Pursuit

To defend its title as the winning utility vehicle in last year’s event, Dodge SRT has created the 797-horsepower Durango SRT Pursuit concept, nicknamed “Speed Trap,” for the 2019 One Lap of America cross-country road rally.

The theoretical police car uses the supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 from the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, and features bolt-on Mopar-branded performance parts, Durango Pursuit Law Enforcement graphics and paint, and a cop car light and siren package from Whelen.

Started in 1984 by famed automotive journalist Brock Yates, the annual One Lap of America is the spiritual successor to the legendary underground cross-country Cannonball Run, with the idea being to move the competition from public roads to a series of timed competitions on road courses and drag strips around the United States. 2019’s One Lap is sponsored by Tire Rack and Grassroots Motorsports Magazine.

This year, from May 4-11, more than six dozen two-person teams will travel more than 4000 miles to compete in a variety of classes in 14 events at eight tracks in seven Midwest states. They will travel between the venues on public roads—rally-style—where they must obey all traffic laws and operate without the assistance of a support team. Just driver and navigator—but with 797 hp, it might be tough to observe all traffic laws.

The Speed Trap team consists of SRT vehicle dynamics performance engineer David Carr and David Hakim, a contributor to dodgegarage.com, where you can follow the competition. No word on whether or not the driving team will used David + David’s Heroes as a theme song.

In addition to the blown Hemi, modifications include a stainless-steel free-flow cat-back exhaust, lowered springs, custom 11-inch-wide 20-inch wheels shod with Pirelli P-Zero rubber (that must last the entire event), and a Brembo brake system featuring 15.75-inch two-piece vented rotors and six-piston calipers up front with 13.78-inch rotors and four-piston calipers in the back. A four-point roll bar and five-point harness belts are installed for safety.

Though it looks like a police car, the second and third row of seats have been removed for weight savings, so “Speed Trap” is not going to transport prisoners or go on patrol.
