The QX Inspiration concept points to the next step in Infiniti’s future

Infiniti revealed this image of the QX Inspiration concept, which will be shown to the public at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The concept previews a new electric vehicle platform for Nissan’s luxury brand, following the trend of other mainstream luxury brands like Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi with SUV-like offerings powered by batteries.

With the new platform, Infiniti promises the spacious side benefits of electrification, with a “lounge-like” interior using “materials inspired by a subtle Japanese sensuality.” It sounds relaxing.

It’s a sign of the times that both the badge and spelled out I-N-F-I-N-I-T-I are illuminated as part of the daytime running lights, a styling choice that’s a bit too ostentatious for my Midwestern sensibilities. But who can deny the upturned smile that spans the bumper? The design theme of the QX Inspiration builds off the traits on the Prototype 10 concept shown at Pebble Beach. Of course, that means we’ll see these themes on future production Infiniti vehicles.

We’ll leave you with our standard reminder about EVs. While this SUV might seem fairly ordinary, in the sense that all-electric crossovers are becoming old hat, an EV platform (and the simplified, modular construction that typically comes with it) means more potential for the future proliferation of sports cars.
