This new-in-crate, twin-cam LT-5 is ripe for an engine swap

Few engines exemplify the full-throttle 1990s horsepower war that raged between the Dodge Viper and Chevrolet Corvette better than GM’s LT-5 V-8. With four camshafts, 32 valves, and 405 horsepower, the 1990-95 ZR-1’s powerplant was pure overkill. And if you missed the opportunity to purchase one new, here’s a second chance.

That’s right, last week this new-in-crate LT-5 popped up on Facebook Marketplace for an eye-watering $19,500. Enthusiasts have been spoiled with low-cost, high-horsepower crate engine options, making it difficult to fully appreciate the all-aluminum engine, which was designed by Lotus and hand-assembled by Mercury Marine.

Located in Houston, this particular example seems to be in near-perfect shape, with only a minor scuff or casting imperfection visible on one of the rear intake runners. It also comes with many of the accessories needed to get this V-8 running in your chassis of choice, including power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, alternator, bell housing, motor mounts, and the all-important wiring harness.

The car world is very much aware of the notorious LS-swap, but what would be the perfect LT-5 swap? Were money no object, I’d drop the DOHC beast straight into a ’90s Caprice Classic Wagon (similar to this 1993 example recently listed on eBay) to create the ultimate king-of-the-hill family hauler.
