Ferrari unveils a pair of 799-hp beasts for “dedicated clients”

Ferrari unveiled a pair of radical limited-edition cars at their factory in Maranello. The Monza SP1 and SP2 are set to be the most powerful Ferrari V-12 engines to date, and draw styling from 1950s Cavallino racing cars.

Ferrari makes it clear this is not Ferrari for the first-time owner, stating in the announcement of the models that they are “aimed at dedicated clients and collectors.” With a heavy dose of form over function, it makes sense. The SP1 is a single-seat open-air car that is claimed to be road legal. The driving experience is amplified by the lack of roof and windscreen. The carbon fiber construction extends to many parts of the cars, including the steering wheel that gets a covering of leather over the ultra-light material.

The SP2 keeps the same silhouette, but forgoes the tonneau cover while gaining a passenger seat and additional roll bar. Both the SP1 and SP2 are based on the 812 Superfast and therefore also carry the 6.5-liter V-12 rated at 799 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. With that kind of power and a claimed dry weight of just 1500 kilograms (3300 pounds), Ferrari claims it takes 2.9 seconds to accelerate from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph).

If the performance and design aren’t enough, Monza SP1 and SP2 owners also have the option to select apparel and accessories from luxury brands Loro Piana and Berluti. A combination of classic styling and modern technical solutions provide a comfortable fit while driving. Racing overalls, jersey, helmet, gloves, scarf and driving shoes round out the options.
