eBay Find of the Week: There’s some mystery surrounding this 1969 Cougar Eliminator

1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator

Mercury Cougars don’t get nearly the attention enjoyed by their Mustang cousins. While the Ford pony car is an American icon, Mercury is now an orphaned brand. Looking at this 1969 Cougar Eliminator, equipped with a 428 Cobra Jet engine, it’s hard to understand why.

With a functional hood scoop, hideaway headlights, and rear spoiler that clearly predates any knowledge of modern aerodynamics, this yellow cat has serious street presence. We can only assume it has the bark to go with its bite, with a rumble sure to grab attention.

Unfortunately, while the listing offers nice photos, there are no real specifics about the car. The seller says it has matching numbers and has been stored in a climate-controlled garage for the past seven years.  Other than a brief reference to a Marti Report, much of the Merc’s history and condition is left a mystery. The Buy-It-Now price appears to be around Hagerty’s #4 (fair) condition value, so there are some big questions left unanswered… or a perhaps big opportunity for lovers of the lesser-known luxury pony car.
