Losses and Lessons: Kick off the flip flops before you drive

VEHICLE COVERED: 1979 Volkswagen Super Beetle Cabriolet

WHAT WENT WRONG: Summer is the season for classic cars. It’s also the season for sandals and flip flops – which increase the risk of an accident because they can slide off your feet or get caught on a pedal. That’s exactly what happened to the owner of a 1979 VW Super Beetle Cabriolet, who was wearing flip flops after spending the day at the beach with his son. While driving home, his flip flop got caught on the gas pedal at an intersection, and while trying to free it, he crossed the center line and struck an oncoming car. The Beetle owner and his son were injured and the car was damaged.

DAMAGE/LOSS: Fortunately, the injuries to the owner and his son were minor, and damage to the VW was restricted to the driver’s side headlamp and fender (in addition to similar damage to the other car). Repair costs were paid by Hagerty.

LESSON: While flip flops are a quick, easy and comfortable alternative to shoes, never wear them to drive. Driving barefoot is legal in the United States and Canada, so simply kick them off and tuck them under the seat until you reach your destination. If you don’t like to drive barefoot, keep a pair of street shoes in your car.
