The 2021 BMW M3 coupe and M4 sedan are, well, not without their detractors. Most of that venom is directed at their new face, which takes BMW’s historic kidney grilles to new lows: The new grilles droop far below the bumper’s centerline, making a face with the same oversized grille treatment as so many other high-end, luxury/performance vehicles. What you see below is the front end that Chip has to start with:

BMW/Daniel Kraus

Certainly not what you’d expect from BMW, and the mandatory European license plate makes matters worse. Since the problem is limited to the front, Chip refrains from the side or front three-quarters view of previous episodes and goes for a full-on frontal view.

In his first pass, Chip keeps the grille’s full height by pushing the functional “bumper” out of the shadows and into the fascia’s painted area. The grille then becomes a secondary design element, behind the bumper. Chip also adds cohesiveness by matching the shape of the lower air intakes to the headlight’s form and reorienting the grille bars vertically: this matches M-series grille textures of the past. He then adds angular lights in the lower valence to visually widen its face.

His finished design is rendered in black, white, and grayscale to complete his sophisticated re-think of the BMW M3 and M4.  So, how much better is Chip’s re-think of the latest BMW sports tourer?

In our latest video, Chip Foose takes on another icon of the motoring world, this time re-imagining the second-generation, one-year-only, split-window 1963 Chevrolet Corvette.  While these particular C2s (or Mid-Years, for the traditionalists) have a two-piece rear window with a metal strip down the center that hinders rearward visibility, this controversial design make these Corvettes rarer and more valuable today.

Regardless, Chip has a few ideas about how to redesign of this American classic. Starting with the side view of a 1963 coupe, Chip traces major elements of the split-window design in order to make subtle tweaks to the body.  He begins by adding stronger angles to both ends of the doors and removing the smoker’s vent window, making the doors sleeker. Chip also speeds up both the A and B pillars so they flow better with the body; this complements the custom chassis and lower ride height planned for what’s under the skin. The final line drawing includes a longer rear window (to speed up the profile), larger wheels with the Corvette wheel cover’s spinner design, a strong center crease, and the C2’s trademark side pipe exhaust.

Chip goes for sky blue in his color rendering, and the shadows highlight all the classic design elements of the second-gen Corvette. With the perfect stance, aggressive wheels, and a sleeker roofline, he certainly tweaked the slower elements without messing with perfection elsewhere. What do you think of the final product?

The iconic Mini did everything from basic commuting to hitting the track in anger, and now Chip Foose has a plan to transform its classy lines to suit a red-hot BMW M3 powertrain. What would a Mini look like in order to be worthy of that performance upgrade?

Chip, much like a tailor, custom-fits the exterior to the powertrain. In his first rendering, he enlarges the wheel wells to fit an M3-worthy wheel, adds E30 M3-esque fender flares, includes a hood scoop to cool the BMW motor, and removes the Mini’s large manufacturing flange on the C-pillar.

For the next rendering, Chip modifies the side to include a chrome body molding carrying the lines from both chrome bumpers. He also adds a lowered stance, a 1969 Jaguar door handle, and a one-piece tilt-front end (eliminating cutlines from the factory hood) with a cutout for a BMW logo. Most importantly, he gives the A-pillars a slight chop. The final change makes the roofline tilt down slightly, giving the impression of speed. Chip finishes the rendering in a dark blue “paint job” and completes it with a natural background.

Chip calls this creation the “Mini-point-3,” since this small car packs such impressive performance under the sheetmetal. What do you think of Chip’s BMW-blended Mini?

The word iconic gets thrown around a fair bit in the classic car world, but few vehicles are worthy of that characterization like the Lamborghini Countach. Its wedge shape, scissor doors, and unique supercar stance is truly an enduring symbol of 1980s excess. The Countach’s frequent placement in popular culture cemented it as one of the most memorable vehicles for a generation, and not just for car enthusiasts. The Countach both evolved and devolved as time went by, as the purity of original the LP400 design made way for busier and distracting redesigns. That’s why Chip Foose has a plan to take the Countach to the next level!

Chip starts with a rough sketch of the Countach’s side view, with gentle softening of the otherwise unyielding angles in the upper greenhouse and the front end. He also removed the rectangular side marker lights,  added rounded door cutlines, larger wheels, redesigned body side scoops, integrated the intake behind the quarter windows, and made a smaller version of the later LP5000 Countach rear wing. The final rendering is finished in a very 1980s white with a bright red background.

The end result is a bit rounder, very much an evolution including the elegance seen in the Countach’s predecessor, the Lamborghini Miura. So what do you think of Chip’s creation?
