Crockett and Magnum join forces for UK RADwood film
Holy parachute pants, what’s going on here? The British are coming, and they’re bringing the ’80s.
OK, so they’re not actually crossing the Atlantic this time around; they’re staying on their side of the pond. RADwood, a celebration of all things 1980s and ’90s, is coming to them instead. As anticipation grows for the August 11 car show at Goodwood Motor Circuit, Hagerty’s UK team—in partnership with Petroleum & Co.—created a short film to promote the event: Magnum Vice in White Powder.
If that title sounds like a mish-mash of ’80s television shows, you’re right. As Sonny Crockett would say, “Just a little something I whipped up on the fly.”
The RADwood promo stars stand-ins for Frederico Librizzi, the aforementioned Crockett, Thomas Magnum (not a chance, since that shirt he’s wearing is about as Hawaiian as I am), and a Porsche 911 Turbo—totally the real deal, but not quite a Ferrari.
The film begins with Crockett in a dead sprint, briefcase in tow, trying to elude the “bad guy”—that would be Librizzi. When Crockett reaches the white right-hand-drive 911, he throws open the passenger door and hops inside. Magnum, sitting behind the wheel and wearing a (gulp) light blue shirt, instructs him to “Look for the powder.”
“It’s in here, boss.”
Wait a tick, Crockett and Magnum have British accents? And Magnum’s the boss? You’ll get no argument from me. Not only are British accents freaking cool, Magnum is currently in charge of the New York Police Department on Blue Bloods. So it all works.
Librizzi, who drives a bright yellow Land Rover Range Rover, charges after Magnum and Crockett, but the dynamic duo manages to elude him and reach the white powder’s drop-off point: the launderette. Crockett runs in, opens the briefcase to reveal Daz detergent and Vanish stain remover, adds some of each to a load of laundry, and then dashes off again.
Then comes the punchline: “Get those retro outfits clean. RADwood is coming.”
A clever little P.S. follows… And no, it isn’t Ricardo Tubbs strolling in and asking, “What do you mean thin ties are out of style? Are you totally without scruples? This is RADwood, man!” (Although that would have been appropriate, since Tubbs actually said the scruples line in Miami Vice.)
No worries, there’s still time to rat your hair and brush up on your ’80s and ’90s lingo. Just wash those parachute pants before you go.
