TMZ: Jay Leno released from the hospital
According to the TMZ website, comedian and car collector Jay Leno has been sent home from the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles where he was taken after being burned in a gasoline fire in his Burbank garage.
Leno was repairing a fuel line on his 1907 White steam car when gasoline, which is used to heat the car’s burner, splashed on his face and arm and then was ignited by a spark. A friend helped extinguish the flames, and Leno was taken to the hospital.
“The ex-late night host posed for a photo taken and posted by the Grossman Burn Center, where JL has been receiving treatment for the past nine days. In it, he seems to be in good spirits alongside the facility staff, but there’s noticeable scarring on his face and hands,” TMZ said. “In a statement, the burn center says Jay will receive follow-up care at their outpatient facility, this after receiving burns throughout his upper [body], including on his chest.”
A statement released by Grossman said: “Jay would like to let everyone know how thankful he is for the care he received, and is very appreciative of all of the well wishes. He is looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with his family and friends and wishes everyone a wonderful holiday.”
Leno writes a column for Hagerty, and his colleagues here wish him a speedy recovery.

Jay, you always said you were driving something that was basically on fire with these steam cars, and I remember when you were in the Hemi that rolled over and after not being injured, you said “My wife’s gonna kill me” well I’m sure she’s glad, as we are, that your ok, we were all praying for you, and I’m sure you’ll get back on the horse immediately, just be careful, you are mortal , be well, Happy Thanksgiving to you and Mavis,
Jay so glad you are doing better after your scary accident. I, as well as all us car nuts are so Thankful that you take the time to share your knowledge, stories and passion for the car culture with all of us. Hope you have a Great Thanksgiving today with your family and a speedy recovery.
Speedy recovery Jay. Looking forward to see you back at it. Best wishes, Have a great Thanksgiving and a wonderful Christmas
Jay. Wishing you a speedy full recovery. Glad you can be home for Thanksgiving with your family.
Quite honestly its difficult as it is to look at that potato head without burns. With them it makes digesting my food somewhat more difficult.
Hope you are in no pain Jay. I’m sure it was a tough ordeal. Just want to say you and I feel the same way about cars and I was also a C/D and R/T reader back in the day and could not wait until the next issue would appear on the news stand. I believe like you do that cars are art and I can only imagine how much the cars of our time will be appreciated in the future and beyond. Get well soon and see you on the telly.
Jay. I’m so glad you are progressing in your recovery. I was one (of many I’m sure) who prayed for you buddy. Your humor and love of cars has given me great joy over the years.
Jay, like usual you have pulled through with your sense of humor intact. May God heal, you quickly so you can get back to doing the things you love. Happy thanksgiving,Merry Christmas, and have a great New year as well my friend. mike from st joseph, mo.
Glad to see you on the mend.
At first I thought that Murphy’s law paid you a visit, and then I realized that the old steamer was probably just jealous of the more exotic and younger cars in your garage! Better keep an eye on that one! You belong to a big (car, bike, and comedy) family out there, and we are all pulling for you. Get well, you’ll be tinkering in the garage again in no time. Another “Jay” in Nebraska. Oh ya! I had a joke for you about the price of gas, but at a time like this it would be thoughtless and insensitive. Get better!!!
I know from my son’s experience how awful burns can be. He and I have car projects, go to car shows and love your show. We send our very best for a speedy recovery.
Our well wishes to a great guy and funnyman. I have been “into” cars since my folks 1951 Ford Convertible. I still recall when the car salesman drove it away in 1957. Wish the folks had kept it.
BUT am glad you made it through a calamity all car guys are subject to–no matter how careful. Get well and thanks for what you do for the car passion.
Sorry to have heard about your accident, but great news to hear that you are doing well! You do have something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving day.
Now comes the real challenge —- to get Mavis to let you go to your garage again. LOL
All the best,
Bill S.
